Why TacticalPontoon Is Discontinuing Support for the Ruger RXM
There comes a point where every builder has to decide what they’re willing to put their name on.
For me, that decision isn’t based on popularity, sales, or how many people ask for a particular product.
It’s based on whether I believe I can build something that meets the standard I’ve spent years establishing.
After evaluating the Ruger RXM, I’ve decided to discontinue TacticalPontoon support for the platform.
This wasn’t a quick decision, and it certainly wasn’t one I wanted to make. I was genuinely excited to see another manufacturer enter the Glock-pattern market. Competition is healthy, and new ideas often move the industry forward.
Unfortunately, after spending time with the RXM, I found myself working around the platform more than working with it.
That isn’t where I want to spend my time.
Every Trigger Starts With the Foundation
One misconception I see fairly often is that a trigger system exists independently of the firearm.
It doesn’t.
Every trigger system I build is ultimately limited by the foundation it’s installed into.
I can improve geometry.
I can refine engagement surfaces.
I can tune spring relationships.
I can change how a trigger feels.
What I cannot do is redesign the firearm around it.
If the foundation introduces unnecessary variables, those variables become part of every trigger I build.
That matters.
The Proprietary Trigger Housing
The first issue is one I simply can’t ignore.
The RXM uses a proprietary trigger housing that retains the ejector with a small polymer pin.
Traditional Glock designs use the frame itself to support the ejector. It’s simple, robust, and proven over decades.
The RXM moved away from that approach.
Normally, I’d accept a design change if it offered a meaningful advantage.
In this case, I haven’t found one.
Instead, replacement trigger housings are sold without the retaining pin, and Ruger doesn’t currently offer the pin separately.
That creates two problems.
First, I can’t offer complete drop-in trigger systems the way I do for Glock platforms.
Second, a critical component now depends on a small polymer part that isn’t easily replaced.
As a builder, I simply can’t ignore that.
Consistency Matters
The next issue is manufacturing consistency.
When I hand tune a TacticalPontoon trigger, I’m relying on predictable dimensions.
The firearm doesn’t have to be perfect.
It does have to be consistent.
Throughout my evaluation, I found slide tolerances varied enough between production batches that obtaining the same result every time became difficult….and not just issues that caused cruciform to be an issue. It would go farther, such as reset cam dimensions, safety plunger height…things that caused excess drag in the system
That isn’t acceptable for the level of consistency I expect from my own products.
Customers shouldn’t have to wonder whether their pistol falls into the “good” batch.
Neither should I.
Parts Should Stay Compatible
I also encountered trigger bars with different trigger pin hole dimensions.
Some accepted standard Glock-compatible trigger shoes.
Others did not.
Again, this appears to vary between production runs.
That may seem like a small detail.
To someone building triggers every day, it isn’t.
When component dimensions change without warning, consistency disappears.
Looking Beyond Purchase Price
The final point has less to do with engineering and more to do with where I’d invest my money if I were starting a custom build today.
The RXM is positioned as a budget-friendly entry into the Glock-pattern market.
I understand the appeal.
The problem is that many enthusiasts eventually replace most of the parts that made the package inexpensive in the first place.
The trigger.
The internals.
The grip module.
Controls.
Sometimes even the slide.
When I look at today’s market, I see something else.
For roughly $350, a builder can purchase a ZEV OZ9 chassis.
A complete RXM often sells around $430.
If my intention is building a premium custom pistol from the ground up, I’d rather start with a chassis designed around that purpose than purchase an entire pistol knowing many of its components will eventually be discarded.
That doesn’t mean the RXM has no place in the market.
It means it doesn’t fit the type of builds TacticalPontoon exists to create.
This Isn’t About Ruger
This isn’t personal.
I don’t enjoy writing articles like this.
I’d much rather announce support for another platform than explain why I’m walking away from one.
I also don’t believe the RXM is beyond improvement.
If Ruger revises the design, improves consistency, and addresses some of these concerns, I’ll gladly evaluate it again.
But today, I can’t confidently recommend it.
And if I can’t recommend it, I can’t build for it.
There are already excellent Glock-pattern foundations available.
I’d rather spend my time refining those than overcoming problems I believe should have been solved before the pistol ever reached the market.
At TacticalPontoon, every platform has to earn its place.
The Ruger RXM hasn’t.
